Professor Norbert Berend AM MB BS MD FRACP
Norbert Berend has been a Global Medical Expert for GSK in a part-time capacity since 2015. He is Head of Respiratory Research at the George Institute for Global Health, Sydney, Australia, Professor Emeritus at the University of Sydney, and Member of the Physiology Group at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, Sydney. Norbert also holds visiting and honorary professorships at 3 Chinese universities. Norbert has been President of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, and the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology. He has served on the Council of the European Respiratory Society, and the Board of the American Thoracic Society. He has a strong research background focusing on the pathophysiology of asthma and COPD, and a particular interest in small airways disease and function. Norbert’s awards include the Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Medal of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (1997), the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology Medal (2011) and the TSANZ Medal (2012).
Monica Fletcher joined GSK in 2017 as the first nurse member of the Global Medical Expert team after a long career as a respiratory primary care nurse, a clinical educator, researcher and patient advocate. She is a Research Fellow at Edinburgh University, and Knowledge Exchange Lead for the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research. Monica served for 17 years as Chief Executive Officer of Education for Health, (a global not-for-profit medical education organisation, specialising in respiratory disease). She has held many prestigious positions including Chair of the European Lung Foundation, Chair and founder of the UK Inhaler Group, Chair of the European Respiratory Nurses Association, and member of the WHO’s Global Alliance Against Respiratory Disease. Her clinical interests are asthma and COPD, in particular, patient education and self- management, implementation of guidelines, and translation of research into clinical practice. Monica is honoured with an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for services to nursing. She has also been awarded Fellowships by the Queen’s Nursing Institute and the European Respiratory Society.
Professor Thys van der Molen
Thys van der Molen has a part-time appointment as a GSK Global Medical Expert, and is also Professor of Primary Care Respiratory Medicine at The University Medical Centre Groningen, The Netherlands. He was a practicing GP for 25 years with a special interest in respiratory medicine, and is a Member of the Groningen Research Institute of Asthma and COPD. His research interests include: asthma and COPD in primary care, integrated care, and the development of outcome measures, symptom and diagnostic questionnaires (including COPD Assessment Test (CAT) and Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ)). Thys was the Founding President of the International Primary Care Respiratory Group (IPCRG), a member of the GOLD executive Committee between 2002 and 2008, and he is a member of the local Dutch asthma COPD GP group (CAHAG).
