Coding for SHINGRIX

Vaccine administration codes are dependent on the services provided. Please refer to the latest edition of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) for appropriate administration codes, and the latest edition of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) manual for appropriate diagnosis codes.

Description: SHINGRIX is supplied in two presentations, a vial and vial presentation and a prefilled syringe presentation.1

  •   *The CDC also created CVX code 188 for “zoster vaccine, unspecified formulation” to facilitate transmission of administration data when the exact formulation of the vaccine is not known (such as when recording data from a vaccination card).
  •   Note that some payers require an 11-digit NDC, which involves adding a “0" immediately after the first hyphen in each GSK NDC.
  •    The prefilled syringe is only available to order in a 10-pack.

Diagnosis Codes

Z23 is the ICD-10-CM code used when reporting an encounter for immunization for all vaccines given within the encounter. In some instances, additional ICD-10-CM coding may be needed.
